FG-MELSA To Embark On National “What Do You Know?” Quiz

The Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Students’ Association (FG-MELSA) presents the fourth edition of the National “What Do You Know?” competition.

FG-MELSA is a national student body that comprises of tertiary students who study Medical Laboratory Sciences/Technology as a programme/course. Currently, there are 11 institutions under their umbrella, amassing over thousand members across the country.

Medical Laboratory Sciences (also known as Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Sciences) is the branch of laboratory medicine that deals with the study of blood and other body specimens to aid in the diagnosis of human disease, determine optimal therapy, and monitor the progress of treatment. Medical Laboratory Scientists are essential members of the healthcare team who are responsible for performing analysis, evaluating normal and abnormal results, and correlating the results with disease states. The information they provide physicians is essential to patient care.

FG-MELSA aims at breeding a generation of students with a sense of patriotism required to fulfill the aspirations of our country by participating meaningfully, purposefully, and actively in national and international health affairs that affect the mass of our people. It also brings all medical laboratory students in the nation together.

From 2012, the federation has been organizing an annual nationwide quiz to give students the platform to exhibit their knowledge and skills, and create a healthy competition amongst participating schools, bringing togetherness. This year promises to be much bigger & exhilarating; as it has been dubbed “Show Your Strength”.

Three preliminary quizzes shall be held before the main event.

First sector:      University for Development Studies (UDS) vs. College of Health, Kintampo (COHK)

Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Venue: ICT Auditorium, University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale Campus.


Second sector:  Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)

Vs        Garden City University College (GCUC)

Vs        Royal Ann College of Health (RACOH)

Vs        Kumasi Technical University (KTU)

Date: Saturday, October 22, 2016

Venue: Kumasi Technical University (KTU)


Third sector:    University of Ghana (UG)

Vs        University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS)

Vs        University of Cape Coast (UCC)

Vs        Narh-Bita College (NBC)

Vs        Premier School of Medical Laboratory Technology (PSMLT)

Date: Saturday, October 29, 2016

Venue: Narh-Bita College (NBC)

One winning school from 1st sector, two winning schools from 2nd sector, and three winning schools from 3rd sector shall compete for the grand prize in the grand finale which shall be held at Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) studios and aired live on Ghana Television (GTV). The institution that emerges winner shall be awarded with a handsome prize accordingly, and gain the bragging rights for the year.

FG-MELSA calls on the support of all students, patrons and stakeholders nationwide to make the programme a success.
